"Content" | Documentary Short Film | Shot on RED Komodo Monochrome
A year ago, I went to visit my friend who was stationed in the Air Force in Las Vegas. He's been struggling with depression because of his career and his dad's cancer diagnosis. We've been friends for about twenty years, but seem to mostly only connect when we're making films, so I tried to unpack some of what he's going through by filming him.
This is the most personal film I've made, and it understandably might not connect if you don't know Danny (it's been rejected by 20 film festivals). But for me it was an important way to take a portrait of a friend in crisis.

I got a new 4Runner. My 4th one in 20 years. First time in a Pro. Thought about making a review, but didn't really want to talk. Just wanted to a reason to film my new truck. Review thoughts below: The good: - Best looking and most fully-featured 4Runner ever made - Probably the last model before a redesign, which may take a few years to work the kinks out (new tundra and sequoia have mixed rev...

Texas surfer living in Hawaii for past 30 years. I still miss those day’s driving up to the seawall to one of those dreamy offshore mornings breathing in the Texas City pollution. Ok. I don’t miss the pollution. Or those trips to south padre where i met my wife of 30 years. It really makes you appreciate good surf. Now i can go out almost any day and get unreal waves but i still reminisce about catching waves off the flagship tee head with the hoots and hollars of my dear friends. Thanks for sharing this video.
Great video! 🤙🏼🤙🏼Nice to see a TX 🇨🇱 surf video that isn’t about novelty waves of Waco pool 🏊🏼♂️ and ship channel 🚢 for a change! Yes-we DO have an actual surfing culture here. 🏄🏼♂️🌊🏄🏼♀️🌊🏄🇨🇱 As a transplant from Southern CA in 2012 (42 years there), being born and raised in Huntington Beach and surfing/living in that city for 25 years, I came to TX thinking there was “no surf” 🤔because that’s what people said. Well, it’s not true at all! 👎🏼‼️There’s plenty of surf, even sizable surf ☝🏼, but it isn’t always “clean” surf or clean surf conditions💨🌊🤷🏼♂️🌊. Yeah, the waves are slower ⏳, barrels are rarer🛢️, wave faces are less steep 📐, and lulls last longer📅, BUT the water is warmer 💧🩳🌤️ for a huge part of the year (trunking it is actually a thing here), surfers are much friendlier and less arrogant than anywhere I’ve ever been 🏅🤙🏼🏄🏼♂️😁, weather drama is synonymous with good surf days (you have to like it though) 🏄🏼♂️💨☔️🌨️🌫️⛈️and you spend more time long-boarding than you ever thought you would if you’re a CA shortboard surfer who transplants to TX 😅😅-but that’s okay with me because when I moved at 42 (I’m 55 now) I actually enjoy longboards more now and I know I’ve had more than my share of phenomenal shortboard conditions in CA, HI, Baja all my life so I’m I’m good with it! 🤙🏼🏄🏼♂️ 🇨🇱🇨🇱Overall, I love TX surfing-real surfing here and not wave pools or tankers either. I have yet to surf Waco and don’t think I ever will because a wave pool is missing so much of what I surf for! It’s not just about a perfectly shaped “wave” or sticking tricks (I mean yeah-for some it is just about that and I can’t relate to that mindset). The thought of paying 90 bucks an hour 💰 🤑to surf (paying for waves like items in a store) is absurd to me, just as following a long list of “safety rules” 🧾✔️to satisfy their lawyers and insurance companies 🤮 is totally foreign to surfing!
U😂 Good🎉? Goo😊dnig
There's something mysterious about the infrared B&W look...looks amazing 👍🏻👌🏻
I was with Anton in the mine literally yesterday.. he's the real deal..
Tell him we said hi. Haven't been up there in a couple years.
I can't thank you and your friend Danny enough for making this short. What a beautiful way to help others while being there for your friend.
You’re very welcome. Glad it connected with you.
Can i help build the Renn Faire?

Interesting to watch....great video
Thanks!
Who’s here after dune?
Loved seeing the infrared photography in Dune after dabbling in it myself. Always thought it'd be cool in a movie for an alien world, and there we go. Best sequence in the movie.
Interesting...having just been there for the first time-and my in-laws, in their 80s, wanting to tag along. We camped in the Chisos Basin Campground and they stayed in the lodge. It was a special week on a variety of fronts.
Hey Roudy, who's gonna carry the midnight mail?
Something I have realized in forums and groups filled with editors and filmmakers is they don’t know about edit friendly codecs they see ProRes and see how large of a file it is and see h264 and see how small of a file it is and think “oh must be less power hungry on my computer” they don’t realize that what codec is being used and how native it is to your NLE can have a HUGE difference on playback. Often more compressed codecs = slower playback. I worked full time editing commercials 8+ hours a day 5 days a week and never had the premiere pro crash. Yet I see all these people saying how they prefer resolve because resolve doesn’t crash. When in my experience resolves timeline is a little clunky compared to Avid or Premiere. Great for color just clunky to edit in. And have never had issues like crashing in premiere. When using the software ALL the time as a pro I would notice some glitches in after effects and in premiere but it wasn’t hardware issues just little bugs in the software that after reaching out to them they would often have patched in the next update. But little things that only advanced users would probably be using as much as me so most UA-camrs probably wouldn’t notice unless working with a larger editorial team. But yeah I think people don’t know how to work with dailies.
Crazy how similar that surf acts to the water I surf in Lake Erie!
God and Jim are One ! ❤
The 'Realistic' sounded more 'Realistic' thats for shure, unbelievable bass and punch, poor JBL ;-)
Georgia is such a doll and makes great music it’s shocking the band doesn’t get more listens.
Thank you for the information! I am considering trying Ironglass out and great to know that the modifier cause loss of light...
I've got MKIIs now and got them without the modifiers and they're beautiful
Just a little love and care could help this cute little player a lot - for example, head cleaning and adjusting, belts replacement and speed tuning, as well as potentiometer spraying with KONTAKT or DEOXIT D5S6 or similar will make it sound nice and smooth as new. ;) not a five minute but 1 hour job, for many years of music and joy... ;) cheers guys!
Really Good review. Like the down to earth aspect of your video.
Thanks!
well said!
Looking to use this combo for an upcoming short. Do I have to use the OLPF? Or can i just slap a Hoya R72 filter on the front?
Yeah, you need the OLPF to do it right.
@@Moviesauce gotcha, thanks! Is there a certain way to achieve the super dark sky that's @ 00:10? Also, is it hard to achieve focus with this setup? since there's multiple spectrums of light hitting the sensor?
@@aleclyons5755 Focus isn't affected by infrared. Works just the same. Best thing to do is to carve out some time to play with it and practice before committing to shooting with it for a short. Dark skies happen naturally with the infrared spectrum because there's no surface reflecting the light. Best way to think of it is you're only seeing things that absorb light. So leaves and organic material show up really well in direct sun. Best to shoot in harsh midday light, which is the opposite of what you would normally shoot. Artificial light/soft light doesn't read particularly well. Of course if you shoot with the OLPF and no R72 you'll get the full spectrum of light which creates some weird colors. With an R72 for infrared spectrum only, you'll want to want to shoot in direct sunlight. I have this video from NYC too. Good example is Time Square where all the electronic billboards/screen just look like they're turned off/black. ua-cam.com/video/NzyAfBRx8mk/v-deo.html
his over cambered boards with the death dagger nose. Such a rad dude. I've head the raddest stories of him and Alva in Paris. Won't repeat them here. Legend.
The man is right and now we all see the US Corporation for what it is, an evil machine.
The guy that's doing Fichtl has the weird hips and shoulders movements really dead on.
Wonder how many clicked on this video thinking it was the Shorty's Steve Olson lol OG Steve is a true legend!
I can't recognize him. He is completely different from what he was in Shorty's. He was like a mad scientist with an explosive hair style. He was very thin at the time.
Great musicians! Vocals could be louder though

This movie is worth watching- good comedy & cast
What a truly brilliant movie, not at all what I was expecting, funny, quirky very clever, reminded me of Baghdad Cafe in a way. This deserves a much wider audience, I truly wish you all the luck in the world..
High praise. Thanks so much! Glad it connected with you.
Holy Crap!...
Good vibes!
Well this movie did not go the direction I thought it would. Lol
This is worst bank robbery movie I've both of them are morons
Hi Evan, the mic on your table does NOT appear to be an MKH-60. It is too long and looks like an interference tube shotgun. Please confirm what it is. Excellent video quality! 02:33
It definitely is an MKH60. Might be the wide angle lens distortion making it look a little more elongated at the edge of the frame. Shot this on a 14mm lens.
I love happy endings...
Steve they are gassing u ...show me what y'all did..these old white dudes get a lot of credit for nothing

Love you girl. Thanks for repping TX with pride. Our beaches and surf might not be as nice as other places, but we have some *immaculate vibes* on our beaches. Mexicans and Rednecks partying and enjoying freedom side by side. It's all love here. ❤️
Even the rednecks are Mexican here.
Gorgeous - thanks for sharing.
I notice that your video, here in youtube, has great colors and lightning! I presume you've captured this in a Red camera. I wish my videos have this quality too! Would you mind to share your export settings to YT?
Color and lighting have nothing to do with export settings. I use the default UA-cam 4k preset in Media Encoder.
@@Moviesauce Thanks!!!
